Working with files in the browser
The Files page is where your folders and files are.
Getting around
- Double click a folder to open it.
- The breadcrumb at the top takes you back up.
- Up one level does the same, one step at a time.
- Search this folder filters what you are looking at. It searches the current folder, not everything.
- List view, grid view and gallery view switch the layout. List shows sizes and dates; grid shows large file type icons; gallery is the grid with image previews. Previews are fetched from your storage through the Connector, so on a folder with thousands of images over a slow link, grid is the fast choice and gallery the pretty one. The choice is remembered.
- Sort by name, size or modified date, ascending or descending, with folders first if you want.
The counter tells you how many items are here, and how many the filter is showing.
Uploading
Three ways, all equivalent:
- Drag files onto the page. The drop target names the folder they will land in.
- Browse files to pick individual files.
- Browse folder to upload a whole folder, keeping its structure.
The Transfers tray shows progress, lets you cancel one upload or all of them, and reports how many finished. Uploads run a few files at a time, and you can keep browsing while they run.
There is a size limit per file
The standard cap is 4 GiB for one uploaded file in the browser. Your administrator may have set a different one; the page tells you when a file exceeds it.
For anything larger, use an SFTP client, which has no such limit.
Downloading
Select one or more items and choose Download. A single file downloads directly; a selection or a folder arrives as an archive.
Selecting things
- Click to select one, and use the checkboxes for more.
- Select all loaded, Select all folders and Select all files cover the visible list.
- Select everything in this folder covers the whole folder, including what has not loaded yet.
The bar tells you how many are selected, and Clear selection empties it.
Organizing
| Action | Notes |
|---|---|
| Create directory | Makes a new folder here |
| Rename | One item at a time |
| Move to | Pick a destination folder |
| Copy to | Same picker, and the original stays where it is |
| Delete | Asks for confirmation, and cannot be undone |
You can also drag selected items onto a folder in the list, or onto a breadcrumb segment, to move them there. Hold Ctrl (Option on a Mac) while dropping to copy instead.
Deleting is permanent
There is no recycle bin and no undo. The confirmation dialog is the last chance.
Deleting a folder that still has content asks you a second time, so you cannot remove a whole tree by accident. Confirming removes the folder and everything inside it.
Moving and copying between storages
Some folders you see come from different storage behind the scenes. A move or copy between two of them runs as a transfer: it appears in the Transfers tray, keeps running while you continue working, even across a page reload, and can be canceled there. Within one storage the same action completes instantly.
When something is not allowed
Your access differs per folder. Some let you upload and not download; some let you upload without seeing what is already there; some are read only, and the page says so at the top.
If an action fails, the page tells you it was not allowed and does not tell you why. Your administrator can see the exact reason.
That is not the browser being unhelpful; the same rule applies on every way of connecting.
Bulk actions
A bulk action reports how many items succeeded and how many failed, rather than stopping at the first problem. A partial result is normal when your permissions differ across the selection.
